THE SKY, EXPLAINED

One moment.
Every horizon.

The starting point is New York City, 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W, on November 8, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. EST (November 9, 01:00 UTC).

The sky stays frozen at that instant. Travel changes your position and horizon; daylight is deliberately disabled across the whole globe.

Movement
360° in 10 minutes of movement. Diagonal movement has the same speed. Pause or stand still and your walk timer stops. Keep a straight course for a full great-circle lap.
The stars
94 catalog stars selected at magnitude +2.5 or brighter, from HYG v4.1. Adjust the magnitude limit from −1.5 to +6.5 to include fainter stars. The count covers the whole globe; your horizon determines which stars you can see. Star size and glow indicate brightness. Sizes stay the same through +2.5; above that limit, brighter stars gradually grow as you reveal fainter stars.
Position accuracy
Proper motion, annual parallax, annual aberration, precession and nutation are applied using Astronomy Engine. Standard atmospheric refraction is approximated near the horizon. This is a visual sky simulation, not a navigation instrument.
Constellation quiz
The quiz can name any IAU constellation with at least one star above your horizon through your current magnitude filter, even outside your starting view. Drag the sky or use arrow keys to look around, then click any visible star belonging to the requested constellation. Dragging does not submit a guess. Your position and magnitude filter stay fixed during the question, while the view, selectable stars and revealed labels update as you look around. After an answer, line figures and names appear, with the target in green and an incorrect guess in red. Lines may connect stars fainter than your filter. The 88 IAU constellations are defined by sky boundaries; these conventional connecting figures are adapted from D3 Celestial, not official IAU boundary lines.
An ideal night
No city light pollution, clouds, Sun, Moon or planets. Catalog magnitudes are fixed, including variable stars. The green ground is featureless by design.
